For some time now, I have been trying to find a good image that would match what I saw in the text books in college showing metallic yield when forces were applied to a metallic test specimen.  Those images showed what the crust looks like around the northern regions of our planet.  It is not the same in the southern regions of this orb – but definitely in the north where a portion of the earth was yielded away from the main body of the planet.

This image shows more of a crack nucleation site on a microscopic scale, so it is not the same thing – but interesting nonetheless:
