New Years and the Power of the Book of Mormon
About a year ago I had just thrown in the towel on all my “New Years resolutions”.
I had 10-12 things I had resolved to do daily and did pretty good the first couple weeks. Soon though my juggling ability was dropping more than juggling and I felt like a failure more than not.
Finally early one morning I prayed and asked what I could do to “turn it around” and feel like I was actually accomplishing something again.
Immediately I felt impressed to cross out every single resolution and write in only one… read the Book of Mormon 1 hr every day, no matter what (felt strongly that everything else would take care of itself and… it did! Like wowza!). It was incredible.
Just a couple days in and amazing things and people started coming into my life. I began juggling the day to day things so much easier and the Spirit would wake me up early enough most days to read before everyone woke up. If not all my other hobbies, etc., were on hold until my reading was done for the day (some days that meant listening to it while I did the dishes or driving etc. or staying up after everyone went to bed lol but I fought for it and since it was my only goal for the day it was a lot easier than 10 daily to do’s).
What was particularly interesting was I started noticing a pattern, for that last 30 minutes was when the deep thoughts and insights would really start flowing.
Almost like a price had to be paid or a spiritual ceiling broken through for me to stop sipping the milk and start chewing on the steak lol.
Then like I said earlier, everything else for the day would just “work itself out”. I felt at peace and content exponentially more often.
This kind of goal or New Years resolutions may not be for everyone but I found, for me at least, that simpler was better and it led to me accomplishing so much more.
Summary I came to, the Book of Mormon is the key to familiarizing oneself with the voice of Christ. It’s the clearest non-living window into His soul, and wow, it’s a breathtaking view. From the introduction of the Book of Mormon:
The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after His resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come…
The record is now published in many languages as a new and additional witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that all who will come unto Him and obey the laws and ordinances of His gospel may be saved.
Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”
We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10:3–5.)
Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Joseph Smith is His revelator and prophet in these last days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the Second Coming of the Messiah. “The First Vision” by J. Leo Fairbanks:
